Memories Worth Preserving
Memories are incredibly important, especially those cherished moments that evoke feelings of love, appreciation, and reflections on times gone by. I made my very first memory quilts in 1985, a special time in my life. Newly married and with very little money in our pockets, I found myself working in my mom’s small town fabric store, brimming with inspiration. I knew deep down that I could create a small quilt that would be both meaningful and beautiful. This was long before small lap blankets could be easily purchased at every dollar and department store, a time when snuggling up on the sofa was not the norm it is today. In fact, I fondly recall my grandmother still using clear vinyl covers to protect her precious sofa cushions, while all my aunts proudly displayed my great-grandmother’s hand-crocheted blankets, which were carefully hung over the backs of their sofas… and you definitely didn’t dare to cuddle up with them!
My heartfelt idea was to create a special memory quilt for both my mother and my mother-in-law, featuring their beloved children, so each large 12” square represented something meaningful about each family member. While sewing those quilts, I vividly remember how full my heart felt, overflowing with love and nostalgia.
Memory quilts, whether they are made to celebrate family, commemorate a special occasion, express love, or honor someone dear who is no longer here, these quilts not only carry profound meaning for the receiver and the giver, but they also hold immense significance for the maker!
Over the years, I have been honored to craft adorable teddy bears and sweet bunny rabbits, cozy pillows, and lovely lap quilts. I have poured countless hours into each piece, using cherished shirts, elegant dresses, neat ties, and baby clothes. They truly are a beautiful way to celebrate life's precious moments while preserving items that hold sentimental value, offering a deeply special way to keep memories alive and close to our hearts.
As the holidays approach, I encourage you to think about making a simple framed quilt square, a warm pillow, or a cozy lap quilt to lovingly preserve the memories of someone you hold dear. Your heart will surely be full in the process!
